Sunshine and Deserts can Cause…

Three Tips on How Sunshine Can Cause Deserts

Too much of a good thing, even sunshine, can sometimes lead to unintended consequences. The same is true in life – overindulging in pleasurable activities in pursuit of happiness can ironically lead to emptiness and unhealthy stress instead. Balance is key to more favorable results. Let’s explore this through three main ideas:

1. The consequences of overindulgence

When people are motivated primarily by pleasure, especially related to food, drink, and vices, it can fuel serious health issues. Overeating can lead to obesity, overdrinking to alcoholism, and smoking to cancer and heart disease.

Research shows mindful consumption – slowing down to savor your food’s taste and texture – can prevent overeating and provide other benefits. The same applies to alcohol and nicotine. Overdoing it decreases enjoyment as your body builds up a tolerance.

2. The psychology of overindulgence

Overindulgence often goes beyond just physical cravings. Psychological factors play a big role in overconsumption behaviors too. While complex, some general tips can help:

  • Eat healthier overall
  • Exercise more regularly
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Snack in moderation vs. large meals late in the day
  • Get sufficient sleep

Our ability to control physical appetites is linked to managing other aspects of life – lust, anger, gossip, greed. It’s all connected. Aim for balance across the board, not just hitting one area.

3. Neurodivergence and coping with ups and downs

Neurodivergent individuals’ brains develop or work differently, leading to different strengths and challenges compared to neurotypical people. Historically, neurodivergence was viewed as a disorder to treat. But now, it’s being reframed as simply a different way of learning and processing, with “disabilities” stemming more from an inaccessible society.

For neurodivergent people, and everyone really, engaging in positive mood-boosting activities consistently, not just when feeling down, is important. This trains your brain to be more balanced. Customizing those activities to your individual interests is key.

By understanding the consequences and psychology driving overindulgence, and taking a proactive, personalized approach to well-being, we can avoid the pitfalls of too much “sunshine” and build more balanced, resilient lives. As the seasons change, so can our mindset. ~Balance Due
